Local Walks

Kirkbean Glen

A 50 minute sheltered woodland walk, steep and narrow in places, with many interesting flowers, plants, birds and water features. Enjoy the view from the seat at the top or take a picnic if you wish.

From Kirkbean village hall car park, take a short walk through the village and turn left towards Dalbeattie for 150 metres. The kissing gate and signpost are on your right.

Carse Bay

A one hour return shore walk to the site of the old Quarantine Port and mouth of the pow. Rest on the seat while you watch the waders and quietly wait for sight of the Kingfishers and Otters which live there.

South Carse Shore

A 45-minute walk. Go south along the shore line, tides permitting, for one kilometre. Turn inland at South Carse settlement. Use the track heading towards the Criffel and keep turning right until you finish back at the starting point.

Powillimount Walk

A 4.5km walk through farmland and woods with views of the Solway coast, mostly on roads. Walk back towards kirkbean taking the first left through Arbigland Estate and follow the signs past John Paul Jones Museum (a great place to enjoy refreshments in their cafe) to the car park at Powillimount beach. From here, you can retrace your steps or take the linear shore walk back to your start point.

Linear Shore Walk

A 5km return walk along the shore. Tides permitting, past the Thirl Stane and other interesting rock formations. If the tide is coming in, you can return along Powillimount Walk
